House Reef: “Lavafinger” In The Uw – Marine Reserve Garajau

Take a deep breath and dive down...

… you can relax at our house reef spot Lavafinger directly in front of the base door in the underwater marine reserve. Whether you explore the small cave there, or stalk the large garden eel field, search the steep wall with countless holes and deep crevices for subtenants, you can always discover exciting things here. Diving along the edge of the reef to enjoy the blue water feeling is particularly beautiful. An anemone tour also offers variety, where you can visit Esmeralda (house moray eel), which has been known there for over 40 years. With a bit of luck, you may encounter one of the rare Atlantic monk seals or manta rays passing by during the summer months. A beautiful Eldorado for all underwater photographers!

“As a passionate underwater photographer, the most rewarding dive sites for me are those that offer plenty of variety. Even better if they are quick and easy to reach. The “Lava Finger” in the Garajau Marine Park fits perfectly into this category. Just a few fin kicks from the dive center entry point, it already impresses with its small cavern landscape.

These caves create magical plays of light and are even suitable for beginner divers. On the other hand, schools of fish regularly patrol the lava formations, attracting predators such as barracudas and groupers. It is likely also the reason why the conger eels around the rocks remain particularly alert. In their shadows, you can find a rich variety of small reef life, including tiny red reef lobsters, arrow crabs, and the occasional nudibranch species.

However, the undisputed highlight is “Esmeralda”: a large brown moray eel with striking blue eyes that has been living in this dive site for decades. She could easily serve as the emblematic mascot of the Lava Finger.”
